Allergens in Food

Labels

Do you have a food allergy – or run a business serving food?

European regulations regarding allergens in food that’s not pre-packaged become mandatory in December. Currently it’s a requirement to state any potential allergens on pre-packed foods but not on ‘non pre-packed’ – or stuff you might buy loose in a sandwich bar, café or deli.

Food allergies are a serious business; 1-2% of adults and 5–8% of children have a true food allergy – this equates to about 1.5 million people in the UK and about 10 people are thought to die from allergic reactions to food each year.

So, for people who have severe food allergies this means they will be able to (hopefully) breathe easy but for people running a food business is this yet another unwelcome legislative burden – or an opportunity?
